Carmel Valley Burn Survivor to Host Fundraiser
Over a year ago, Derek Thomas was traveling home from Mammoth, CA along with four other passengers; Derek's girlfriend, Amanda Post, two other fellow athletes and their coach. Derek, Amanda and one other passenger, Natalie Nield attended Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley. Their SUV lost control, flipped onto its side, and was struck by an oncoming van. Derek was pulled out with burns over 85% of his body and was given a 1% chance of survival. After one year in the hospital and 43 surgeries, he has returned home. His rehabilitation will continue for years, but his thirst for life and desire to "make-it" is inspirational. One of two survivors of the tragic accident, Derek teamed up with the Burn Institute to create The Derek Thomas Fund. As a kick off for the fund, he will host the Derek Thomas Youth Rugby Invitational on February 11 & 12, 2012 at Cathedral Catholic High School. This fundraiser will draw teams from throughout California. Derek has a passion for rugby and this tournament offers the community a chance to come out and support the Thomas family as they manage the emotional and financial strains of the long road to rehabilitation. The tournament is free to the public and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Saturday night will also feature a dinner in the Mission Tower Room at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for players, their families and event sponsors. The Burn Institute is a local non-profit health agency dedicated to reducing the number of burn injuries and deaths in San Diego and Imperial counties through fire and burn prevention education, burn care research and treatment, and burn survivor support services. For more information call the Burn Institute at 858.541.2277. The community can help Derek and his family by donating to The Derek Thomas Fund online at www.burninstitute.org.
