On the afternoon of November 12, 2011, several calls were made to the Santa Cruz 911 department to report black smoke coming from a single family home at this address. Central Fire District personnel arrived on scene to find flame visible through the open front door and smoke venting from several areas of the home.

Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack from the front of the house while a second crew fought the fire from the rear of the home. A truck company made their way to the roof to ventilate smoke and gases.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but had managed to spread throughout most of the home. Despite the quick action of firefighters, extensive heat and smoke damage destroyed most of the family’s possessions.

One resident reported that the stove had malfunctioned while she was cooking. It appears that the malfunction caused cooking oil to ignite and spread fire throughout the kitchen.

All of the residents, including five children, were accounted for uninjured. One resident was treated for smoke inhalation and first degree burns.

The home has been determined to be uninhabitable and the family will receive assistance from the Santa Cruz County Red Cross.
