The Madison Fire Department responded to the UW Madison Chemistry Building on the morning of January 30th, 2012 for a person who was injured in an explosion. At 9:34 am a full fire response was sent to the building at 1101 University Avenue.

Engine 4 arrived on scene first and made an assessment of the incident. They learned from UW staff that a small explosion occurred in a laboratory and one person was injured. Engine 4 and Medic 9 remained on scene, but the full fire response was cancelled. Paramedics treated the injured person for non-life threatening injuries and transported the patient to a local hospital.

The Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) was consulted by radio to gather more information on the material involved in the explosion and the related hazards.

The UW Police Department and the UW Safety Department are investigating the cause of the explosion. The UW Police Department public information officer is handling media inquiries.
