2 Memphis Firefighters Receive Severe Burns While Attacking Structure Fire
The Memphis Fire Department responded to a second alarm fire at 124 E. Peebles Road, Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 9:33 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene at 9:36 p.m., firefighters reported heavy fire visible from the one story commercial structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Forty-four (44) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately one hundred one (101) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Division Chief K. Reeves was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 11:26 p.m. and reported knocked down at 12:01 a.m. Two (2) firefighters were transported in stable condition to The Regional Medical Center's Burn Unit with 2nd degree burns to their hands. One (1) firefighter was transported in stable condition to Methodist University Hospital for an elevated blood pressure. They were treated and later released. There were no civilian injuries. Animal Control responded to the scene to retrieve multiple animals that were rescued from the structure. It has been determined that the commercial structure did not have a sprinkler system. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $200,000 building and $100,000 contents. The origin and cause of the fire is inconclusive at this time. The fire remains under investigation. The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke detector in their place of residence. Any City of Memphis resident can apply for a free smoke detector by contacting the Fire Museum of Memphis at (901) 320-5650. Always have a plan of escape in case there is a fire.
