Two firefighters from the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue Squad were killed Sunday as they were returning home from a weekend firefighting seminar at McDowell Fire and Rescue College, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The victims are identified as Jeremy Bolick, 23, and Tommy Wright, 20, both from Blowing Rock, N.C.

"The members of the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue Department and the community of Blowing Rock ask for your prayers and understanding as we support those who have lost a loved one," the department said in a news release.

According to the department, Bolick joined the squad in October 2007, and Wright joined in September 2009. Both were working on their Firefighter 1 certification.

According to a Highway Patrol report, Bolick was traveling about 75 mph in a 50 mph zone 4 miles north of Marion, N.C. He apparently lost control of his Ford Mustang on wet pavement, forcing it into an oncoming car.

Bolick and Wright were pronounced dead at the scene. The passengers in the other vehicle, Jeffrey and Cynthia Bassett of Florida were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to the Observer.
