At 1852 on December 10, 2011, Fire department crews were dispatched to the scene of a structure fire in the apartment complex located at 1012 N. Oregon in El Paso, Texas.  Upon arrival, the fire was classified as a condition 2 with smoke and flames showing.  The complex was evacuated and suppression efforts begun.  The fire involved 7 apartments and resulted in the displacement of 14 persons, who are being assisted by the American Red Cross at this time.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.  Seven fire companies responded to this fire which resulted in approximately $15,000 in damage.  No injuries were reported.

This fire is a reminder that emergencies can happen at any place and any time.  The Fire Department would like to remind you to take some basic steps to help keep you and your family safe in case of fire.

1) Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your residence;
2) Develop and practice your emergency escape plan with your family.   Make sure everyone is familiar with the plan and knows the meeting place once they get outside;
3) when the alarm sounds, get out and stay out;
4) conduct a home safety survey to identify common causes of fire in your homes and correct any issues that you find.

If you have questions regarding your home safety or are in need of assistance in obtaining smoke alarms, please contact the El Paso Fire Department Fire Prevention Division at 915-485-5699.
