Abilene Firefighters Attack Blaze at Former Electrical Generating Plant
At 10 AM on November 10, 2011, units of the Abilene Fire Department responded to a fire at a former electrical generating plant in the 9400 Block of East Lake Road. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke billowing from the upper floors of a 4-story concrete structure and heavy fire conditions on the second floor. Crews attacked the blaze, bringing it under control in about an hour. The extreme heat generated by the blaze, compounded by heavy smoke conditions, made operations difficult and two firefighters received minor burns. They were treated and were able to return to duty a short time later. The fire was started when cutting and demolition operations being performed on the building ignited flooring, subflooring, and debris on the second floor. The fire caused approximately $8,000 in damage and no other injuries were reported. Author:Abilene Fire Department Press Release
