Around 1 PM on September 21, 2011, units of the Abilene Fire Department responded to a grass and brush fire on North Judge Ely Boulevard, near Rainey Creek.  The fire spread throughout the area, enveloping the area just west of Rainey Creek.

One structure, a hay barn, was directly threatened but as of this report, no structures have been damaged.  The Texas Forest Service responded to assist with ground personnel and equipment, as well as aerial tankers.

This fire is located in extremely difficult terrain with a heavy fuel load and is expected to burn throughout the night.  The burn area covers approximately 150-180 acres and the perimeter of the fire is being held at this time.

However, area residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate at a moments' notice if conditions change.  The cause of this fire is under investigation.

Due to the impressive smoke plume generated by this fire, curious spectators hampered fire department access.  Units of the Abilene Police Department and the Taylor County Sheriff's Office responded to assist with traffic control.
