At 1:20 AM today, July 5, 2011, units of the Abilene Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire in the 1700 block of North 3rd Street after a resident in the 400 block of Merchant Street reported seeing smoke in the area of the residence.  Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished a fire in the utility room of the home but it had already caused approximately $10,000 in damage.  Five residents of an adjacent apartment were temporarily displaced due to heavy smoke conditions.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire, with the previous residents having moved out the previous day.  Abilene Fire Department investigators have determined this was an intentionally set fire and have developed persons of interest in connection with the blaze.

The owner of the property was contacted and has been working with investigators as they sort out the circumstances surrounding the case.    There were no injuries reported and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in less than twenty-five minutes.
