Crews with the Abilene Fire Department were called a structure fire in the 400 block of Ross just before 9:00 a.m. Dispatchers were told the house was vacant and there was fire seen coming from the structure, Division Chief Joey Kincaid, a spokesman for the department said in a news release.

When firefighters arrived, the fire has spread through an attached carport to a neighbor's fence and a large pile of brush. According to Kincaid, a second alarm was initiated for additional manpower and equipment to fight the fire. A total of 28 firefighters fought the blaze and were able to keep it from spreading to the house next door.

There was heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the vacant house. According to Kincaid, no injuries were reported.

The fire started in the rear of the house, according to fire investigators. An investigation continues with the fire listed as suspicious in nature.
