Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units responded to a commercial shopping center fire, Monday, November 14, 2011, at approximately 8:05 a.m., in the Reston area of Fairfax County, Virginia. The shopping center is located at 11130 South Lakes Drive.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the ceiling of the Hour Eyes store upon arrival. Firefighting crews gained access to the ceiling, attic, and then cut into the roof to attack the spreading fire. The incident commander called for a second alarm due to the potential of the fire spreading to other businesses.

As crews fought the fire, it was determined the fire had originated from Cafesano, a restaurant adjacent to Hour Eyes. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the fire. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure there were no hidden hotspots. The Hour Eyes store sustained major smoke, fire, and water damage, while Cafesano, received moderate damage as crews gained access to the fire in the ductwork above the ceiling.

Both businesses have been closed until further notice. Sprinklers did not activate in Cafesano. There were no injuries. Damage to both stores is estimated at approximately $305,000. According to fire investigators, the restaurant fire was accidental. The cause of the fire was heat from the brick oven igniting combustibles inside and near the hood and exhaust system.
