Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing in Field North of Cornelius

Just prior to 1:30pm on Friday, May 27, 2011, the Cornelius Fire Department (CFD) was dispatched to assist Washington County Fire District #2 with a downed aircraft in the area of NW Bagley RD which is near the Olinger Air Strip. Crews were unable to find the aircraft at that location, while Cornelius Engine 813 was responding they came upon the aircraft located in a field Northwest of the intersection of NW Susbauer RD and NW Hornecker RD (3/4 mile from original location).

CFD crews found a Cessna 152 aircraft intact with no significant damage and the pilot with no injuries. The pilot reported that the aircraft had lost power and he attempted to land at the near by air strip, but was unable to make it to the runway. The pilot made the decision to land the aircraft in a field with grass that was 2 feet in lenfth.

After landing, the pilot shut of the fuel supply, eliminating a risk for fire. CFD firefighters remained on scene for a short time and then cleared after no hazards were found.

Cornelius Fire was assisted on scene by Washington County Fire District #2, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and Washington County Sheriff's Office.
