Arizona's Schultz Fire Spreading Rapidly
The Schultz Fire was reported at approximately 11:00 a.m. Sunday, five miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona in the Schultz Pass area on the southeast side of the San Francisco Peaks. Since then, it has grown to more than 8,800 acres and is threatening homes, according to InciWeb. Crews are faced with hot, dry weather and a forecast of sustained winds up to 20 miles per hour with gusts of more than 30 miles per hour. The fire is burning at a high intensity and a very high rate of speed. Spotting has been reported up to 1/2 mile away, according to InciWeb. Several hundred homes remain under an evacuation order. There are reports that the fire moved within 500 yards of some of those homes as it moved out of the Cococino National Forest. The Southwest Type 1 Incident Management Team has assumed management of the wildfire that is burning in Ponderosa pine, mixed conifer and pinyon-juniper. Currently there are 400 firefighters, eight air tankers and five helicopters are assigned. But, wind conditions will determine whether or not the air resources can be used. The blaze is burning next to State Highway 89, which is closed north of Flagstaff. Fire officials hope they can keep it from jumping the highway. Author:Barbara Brooks - Fire Department Network News
