Automatic Fire Sprinkler Stops Fire In Downtown Las Vegas Business
A downtown business was saved from serious fire damage late Tuesday night by an automatic fire sprinkler that held the fire in check until firefighters arrived on scene and put the remaining fire out. The business was closed when the fire started. There were no injuries in connection with the incident. Firefighters responded to Artistic Iron Works, 105 West Charleston Blvd. (at Commerce) at 11:39 p.m. after some workers in a tire shop across the street noticed smoke coming from the large warehouse type building and called 9-1-1. A minute later the fire alarm office received notification from the company's alarm monitoring company that the automatic fire sprinkler system had activated. Firefighters were able to quickly gain entry into the closed business by using a special system known as a Knox Box, which makes keys available to firefighters, allowing them entry to the building without having to break in. This alone saved thousands of dollars in damage to the doors on the building. Once firefighters gained entry, they found a fire on the bed of a company service truck. Above it, one automatic fire sprinkler rained down water on the fire. The fire was completely extinguished by firefighter in less than one minute. Damage was confined to a small area on the bed of the truck. The truck itself was not damaged, neither was the building or contents. Damage was estimated at less than $2500. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Because of the automatic fire sprinkler, this business will be able to open on time without any loss of services or product. Had the business not have the sprinkler system, the fire probably would have spread to the rest of the large truck as well as two others parked next to it. Smoke alone would have caused several thousands of dollars in damage and there could have been the possibility of loss of production and employees not being able to work. The system is credited with saving the business ten of thousands of dollars from potential damage. Author:Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Press Release
