Automatic Fire Sprinkler Stops Fire In Downtown Las Vegas Hotel
A commercial dishwasher in one of the kitchens at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino caught fire late Friday afternoon. An automatic fire sprinkler above the dishwasher activated and quickly brought the situation under control. But the brief fire did produce enough smoke where it is estimated about 1000 people evacuated the hotel for approximately 30 minutes. Firefighters responded to the kitchen on the second floor in the meeting / banquet room area of the hotel at 4:38 p.m. on January 27th, 2012. When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was showing from the hotel so a second alarm was dispatched to the scene. Once firefighters arrived in the kitchen, they found the fire was out, but there was still smoke in the building. Firefighters assisted with removing the smoke and water from the kitchen area. Within thirty minutes people were permitted to return to the building. The fire destroyed the dishwasher which had a large natural gas heater unit within it to dry dishes after they were washed. That was the area where the fire occurred. Damage was estimated at $5000. Within 40 minutes after the call was received of the fire, all fire & rescue units had left the scene and the business in the hotel was back to normal. There were no injuries in connection with the incident. This is the second time within two days that a fire occurred in the kitchen of a building within Las Vegas that has automatic fire sprinklers. One was a hotel and the other an apartment. In both cases damage was kept to a minimum, there were no injuries reported and business was back to normal in a very short amount of time.
