Big Bear Lake, California

Nic Turner and Jon Curtis, Firefighter/Paramedics with the Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District will compete with other firefighters from across the United States in the 19th Annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle, Washington on March 7, 2010. This unique race to the top of the Columbia Center in full combat gear and self-contained breathing apparatus is the largest individual firefighter competition in the world. At 788 feet of vertical elevation, the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle stands as the second tallest building west of the Mississippi. It takes 69 flights of stairs and 1,311 steps to reach the highly-acclaimed observation deck overlooking the city.

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Mills says, "The Fire District provides a wellness and improvement program for its firefighters as well as a workout room equipped with exercise equipment." Daily workouts are achieved in order to keep the firefighters in top physical condition in order to perform their jobs efficiently." Annual physical fitness exams are conducted to establish levels of fitness and identify areas for improvement. "Firefighter/Paramedics Turner and Curtis are no exception in being physically fit. We are very proud of Nic and Jon and the Fire District will support them in any way we can." Chief Mills says.

The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb supports the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, raising money through sponsorships, individual and department fundraising, and entry fees. In 2009, the event featured over 1,500 firefighters from 244 different departments and brought in a record $640,000 for blood-cancer research and patient services. Last year Turner competed in the stair climb finish with a time of 21 minutes, raising more than $4,500.

Donations for the fundraiser are being accepted at the Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District fire station located at 41090 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, 909.866.4668. Checks should be made payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. "Thank you to our sponsors, Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District and westcoast911.com", says Firefighter/Paramedic Turner. "We are looking forward to the Stairclimb and raising money to fight leukemia and lymphoma."
