A firefighter in Birmingham, Alabama was taken to the hospital after battling a fire Wednesday morning. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis told the Birmingham News the firefighter suffered from dehydration.

"With the conditions and the humidity, it took it's toll but he is OK," Mardis said.

The fire started just after 4:30 a.m. in a vacant home in Pratt City. The vacant house was destroyed and the blaze spread to a home next door where an elderly woman had to be rescued, according to WBRC-TV.

Firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour.

Fire investigators still have to determine how the fire started.
