Fire inspectors estimate roughly $950,000 in damages to six structures and a vinyl fence that were damaged in a brush fire on August 17, 2011.

One home and a cottage on Kipuka Street were considered a total loss. American Red Cross was on scene to assist a family of eight that was displaced.

Three other homes and a shed along Kipuka were also damaged, as well as roughly 1,000 feet of vinyl fencing near Ala Kinoiki.

Fire officials estimate the fire burned through roughly 50 acres of brush. No injuries were reported. Police dispatch was notified of the fire at about 2 p.m. yesterday.

The fire broke out near Ala Kinoiki but quickly traveled near homes along Kipuka Street due to heavy winds. Residents in approximately 98 homes were asked to evacuate. The fire was deemed under control by 5:30 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:20 p.m.

The Kaua'i Fire Department had roughly 50 personnel on scene, including 20 off-dutyfirefighters that were called in to assist.

Engines 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, along with Trucks 2, 5 and 6, a brush truck, Rescue 3, and Air 1 assisted in yesterday's effort. Twenty-one police officers were on scene to evacuate residents and close downs roads in the surrounding areas. Other assets included the County's Department of Water and Public Works, KIUC and a few private contractors that provided water trucks.

Police reopened Ala Kinoiki and Po'ipū roads by 6 p.m. while Kipuka Street remained closed until about 8 p.m.
