The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)/Riverside County Fire Department will conduct a prescribed burn along the Redhill south fuel break below the Nature Center in Idyllwild beginning February 1st thru and may continue through March 31st 2011. The Redhill fuel break, established in 1994, provides a fire buffer from Pine Cove to Strawberry Creek in Idyllwild.

50 piles of brush and slash are planned for this prescribed burn. CAL FIRE crews worked throughout the summer in 2010 by thinning brush and clearing out dead vegetation along the Redhill fuel break. This prescribed burn is the last step in reducing the fuel load.

The goal of this prescribed burn is to reduce hazardous wildfire fuels and to improve the wildlife habitat. Prescribed fire operations will be conducted only during proper weather conditions and with approval from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).

CAL FIRE engines, fire crews, and overhead personnel will be assigned to this prescribed burn for its duration. This and other prescribed burns are part of CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Pre-Fire Management Program.

If you have questions or would like additional information on this prescribed burn please contact CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Captain Mark Barr at 951-712-3072, or Public Information Officer, Captain Mike Smith at (951) 940-6985.
