CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Hosts Annual Wildland Fire Preparedness Exercise

As part of continued training and preparation for the upcoming 2011 wildfire season, CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Information Officer, Captain Mike Smith will host a media day during our annual Wildland Fire Preparedness Exercise on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Drills begin at 8:00 AM and conclude by 5:00 PM. Inmate firefighting crews from the CAL FIRE Riverside Unit participate in this yearly exercise that exhibits and evaluates their ability to safely suppress wildland fires. Fire crews are observed and rated in their ability to hike, cut fire line and other fire suppression functions.

The exercise will take place behind the United States Forest Service Vista Grande Fire Station located on Highway 243, 12 miles south of Banning, CA (Thomas Bros. page 782 (insert 783) -C3). Media may begin set-up no earlier than 7:30 AM.

CAL FIRE/Riverside County Public Information Officers will conduct tours of the drill to the media. Important safety information will be provided to those who wish to participate in the tour. Interview opportunities of CAL FIRE Officials will be available during the exercise.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
