Oregon Wildfire Stopped at 15 Acres

The Call Creek Fire in the Central Oregon Forestry District east of John Day, Oregon has been fully lined. Three fire engines, two hand crews and a bulldozer were able to keep the fire to just 15 acres. Crews will be on scene of the lightning-caused fire for approximately three more days handling mop up, according to a news release from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).

Statistics from January 1, 2010 show there have been 196 lightning-caused fire on the 15.8 million acres forestland protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry that have burned approximately 296 acres. There have also been 417 human-caused fires that have burned approximately 5,400 acres.

Over the last ten years, 310 lightning-caused fires burned approximately 20,981 while 658 human-caused fires burned approximately 4,870 acres, according to ODF.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
