Oregon Legal Burn Ignites Nearby Field
Units with the Canby Fire District were dispatched to a small grass fire in the 900 block of NW Territorial Road Monday afternoon. The fire was ignited by a nearby legal agricultural outdoor fire and moving slowly uphill towards a home, according to a news release from the District.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish and contain the slow moving fire then they turned their attention to the controlled burn, agricultural debris from a filbert operation.

According to the Canby Fire District, the State of Oregon allows three types of regulated fires: Backyard Burning, Recreational Fires and Agricultural Burning. There are two seasons for Backyard Burning, March 1st - June 15th and October 1st - December 15th. Recreational Fires, or campfires are allowed unless there is extreme fire danger or a municipal rule prohibits them. Agricultural Burning is burning of waste from a for-profit agricultural business, is regulated on a daily basis depending on air quality and fire danger, according to the District.

This fire was allowed but does not shift the liability or responsibility for safe outdoor burning, according to the Canby Fire District.
