The Canyon Fire erupted Sunday in the Lower Kern River Canyon west of Lake Isabella, California. The 3,000 acre fire has called for evacuations of several recreation sites along the Lower Kern River.

According to InciWeb, approximately 350 firefighters from the US Forest Service (USFS), the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are working under Unified Command on the blaze burning in rugged terrain. Eight airtankers and five helicopters attacked the fire from the air.

A Type II Incident Management team has been ordered and will arrive tonight at 6:00 p.m., according to InciWeb.

The blaze jumped Highway 178 and forced its closure. According to CalTrans, the road is now restricted to one lane in each direction from just east of Highway 184 to just west of Highway 155.

There were no reports of any injuries or structures threatened. Residents in the area can call a 24-hour fire information line at (760) 379-5646, extension 564.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
