Around 4:20 on October 18, 2011, units of the Abilene Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a home in the 2900 block of Wyndrock Drive.

Firefighters arrived less than three minutes later to discover heavy smoke emanating from the eaves, vents, and chimney of the home.  No one was home at the time and firefighters forced entry through the front door.  They quickly extinguished fire in a large entry-way closet and in the attic space directly above.

A cat, rescued from inside the residence, was taken to a veterinarian for evaluation by a relative of the occupants.  Even with the aid of high-powered fans and gusty winds, it took almost forty-five minutes to vent all of the smoke from the home.

Fire damage was limited to the large closet, its contents, and a small portion of the attic, but the entire home suffered a great degree of smoke damage.  Damage is estimated to be at least $20,000.  The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
