Chesapeake Fire Department Installs New Technology to Better Prepare Vehicle Extrication Crews
Vehicles today have become extremely complex and pose many extrication challenges during emergency crash situations. The Chesapeake Fire Department has installed a mobile, vehicle information software program on its squad rescue truck and three ladder companies, which utilizes the most advance level of technology available today. This will better prepare our extrication crews, enhance firefighter safety, and increase patient care. Vehicles have become extremely complex and pose many challenges during emergency situations. Rescue crews are facing new technologies and fuels that present unique challenges in safely removing trapped victims after a crash. These challenges include un-deployed airbags, airbag gas generators, and complex power grids utilizing multiple batteries and capacitors. These environments often create dangerous conditions for the victim and the first responder. By using this computer-based, touch screen technology, crews will have instant access to detailed diagrams of the vehicle they are working on; including the most updated safety information on hybrid, natural gas, propane, or electric vehicles. The software details the location of every safety feature and hazard found on each specific vehicle. This will give first responders the information they need to successfully extricate patients in the quickest amount of time, while maintaining their safety.
