The Chino Valley Fire District and Chino Valley Fire Foundation recently held a Chili Cook Off and Muster, which pitted Fire Explorer teams against each other in athletic events to build team spirit and camaraderie between kids with an interest in the fire service.

"It's just a good time for the kids to get out here and show them what they've learned through the Explorer Program," says Captain Mike Flaherty of the Chino Valley Fire Department.

Eight different departments were represented with twelve different teams. Activities included the Bucket Brigade, Make and Break, and a Water Ball event. Winners were given plaques in each event and are listed here:

Water Ball
1st Montebello
2nd LA County Post 2

Bucket Brigade
1st City of Riverside
2nd Moreno Valley
3rd Murrieta

Make or Break
1st City of Riverside
2nd Ontario
3rd Moreno Valley

Overall Winner
City of Riverside

About the Chili Cook Off, Sarah Evinger, Vice President of Chino Valley Fire Foundation, explains, "The vast majority are past participants of our event. We do have a few new ones. They've heard from friends and they came today. We have probably about three new participants this year who are joining us." Judges decide on the top three winners in the chili competition. The public also votes for their favorite chili in the People's Choice Award.

First Place in the Chili Cook Off went to The Gas Company, while Second Place went to the Chino Youth Museum.  Third Place and the People's Choice Award were both awarded to "To the Max Chili".

In addition to the Cook Off and Muster, there was live entertainment, rides for the kids, dogs available for adoption, and food and craft vendors. The money went to three areas the Chino Valley Fire Foundation supports: public education, supporting needy families, and the Make a Child Smile event.
