City-Navy Aircraft Mishap Drill to Take Place in Chesapeake
Naval Air Station Oceana has coordinated with the city of Chesapeake to have a mishap drill March 23, 2011 involving a simulated Navy jet crash at Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress. This drill is taking place in order to train the city's first responders in the case of a Navy jet crash in the city of Chesapeake and will strengthen existing coordination efforts between the city and the Navy's first responders. The drill will include a multitude of emergency services personnel and vehicles responding to the Navy's fire trainer, which will be placed on the old tarmac at Fentress. NAS Oceana personnel practice annually, sometimes more, for the potential of a military aircraft crash, and the drill often involves the city's first responders, but this will be the first time such a drill has taken place at this level of involvement in Chesapeake.
