The Clark County Fire Department is hosting a community open house at Fire Station 28, located at 10820 W. Sahara Ave., near Town Center Drive, on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Dec. 10 open house coincides with a holiday toy drive the Fire Department is supporting in partnership with the Southern Nevada Burn Foundation. Visitors are welcome to donate unwrapped toys at the open house. Toys also can be dropped off at any local Clark County fire station through Dec. 18. The toys are being distributed to children through local agencies and charities. The Fire Department is hosting open houses with community partners on Saturdays at one fire station every other month through June 2012 so the public can obtain fire, drowning prevention and other life-safety information. Clark County Commission Chair Susan Brager, whose Commission District F includes Station 28, plans to attend the Dec. 10 event. "The open houses are a wonderful opportunity for our residents to familiarize themselves with fire stations in their neighborhoods and the services the Clark County Fire Department offers," said Commissioner Brager. "The events have been very popular with the public because they are fun and educational."

Participating agencies include Safe Kids Coalition, Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition, Water Reclamation, Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross, Clark County School District Police, Nevada Child Seekers, Trauma Intervention Program of Southern Nevada, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's S.W.A.T. team and McGruff crime dog, and staff from Clark County Business License (2 p.m. to 3 p.m.).  The Fire Department's fire safety house, which teaches children how to get out of their homes safely in case of fire, also will be at the event in addition to its popular "Captain Be Safe" inflatable firefighter character. "Education is the key to preventing emergencies from happening and helping the public stay safe when fires and other dangerous situations do occur," said Clark County Fire Chief Bertral Washington. "We appreciate all the public safety partners who have contributed to making these open houses a success."

The next open house will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Station 18, located at 575 E. Flamingo Road near Spencer Street.
