Cooking Fire In Las Vegas Apartment Displaces Family of Four
A cooking fire caused extensive damage to an apartment at the Sundance Village Apartments, 6500 W. Charleston Blvd at 2:43 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012. Fire dispatchers were notified that a grease fire got out of hand and was spreading in the apartment. When firefighters arrived at the 2-story wood frame/stucco apartment building with eight units, the kitchen and living room area of one downstairs apartment was heavily involved with fire. Firefighters had the fire under control in just a few minutes. The fire gutted the kitchen and living room area. The rest of the unit had heavy smoke and heat damage. Damage was estimated at $25,000. Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental, the result of food left cooking on the stove unattended. One adult was home at the time of the fire, three adults and a teenager live in the apartment along with their pet dog. The dog was found in one of the bedrooms by firefighters apparently overcome by the thick black smoke. Apartment management is relocating the family to another vacant apartment in the complex. The American Red Cross was on scene assisting with belonging requirements. The family lost nearly everything they own and they d0 not have insurance. Cooking fires are the leading cause of fires and fire related injuries both in Las Vegas and across the United States. Grease fires unattended are the cause of nearly 60% of cooking fires. When cooking with grease, you should stay in the immediate area to take care of any emergencies that might arise. Author:Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Press Release
