Cornelius Firefighters will be out in force this weekend, and hopefully it's not working on fires. Instead we'll be out working with some of our partners in support of a few of our biggest community projects. First, this Friday December 16th, 2011 if you work out at the 24 Hour Fitness on Tualatin Valley Highway in Hillsboro don't be surprised if you see a firefighter in full protective gear using the stair climbing machine.

It's all part of a fundraiser that we are once again teaming up with 24 hour fitness on to support the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma. Starting at 7:00 am on Friday and going until 7 :00 am on Saturday members of our Stair Climb Team will be taking turns working on the stair climber machines in full firefighter gear for 24 straight hours. We are encouraging people to stop by and cheer us on or drop off a donation that will support our fundraiser for the fight against blood cancers.

This event will also help our Stair Climb Team get ready for the Seattle Stair Climb, the largest firefighter competition in the world, that happens every year in March. If you can't make it in for event but still want to help you can find our team page is http://www.llswa.org/site/TR/Events/General?team_id=41442&pg=team&fr_id=1220.

Right after our firefighters climb down from the stair climb machines they will head to the Cornelius Walmart to work on our other big community project, our annual Christmas Toy and Food Drive. With requests for assistance being much higher than years past we want to make it as easy as possible for people to donate a new toy or non perishable food item. Firefighters from Cornelius and Forest Grove will be on hand at the entrances to the Walmart store from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm where you can make a purchase there and drop it off with our firefighters as you walk to your car. The Cornelius Walmart is located on N. Adair Street at N. 4th Avenue on the west side of Cornelius.

This year the Forest Grove and Cornelius Firefighter Toy Drive expects to serve over 1,100 kids in our community. For public questions about these fundraisers please call our fire station at 503.357.3840. For media inquires please call our PIO at the number included with this message, there should be great photo ops at each event.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
