Crown Fire Contained
The Crown Fire which burned nearly 14,000 acres was declared 100 percent contained Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This comes just as the National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for the mountains of Los Angeles County for Thursday afternoon through Friday. The watch includes the foothills of the Antelope Valley, where the Crown Fire burned, and has been issued due to a forecast of gusty winds and very low humidities. These conditions are similar to conditions that were in effect last Thursday, when the fire began. There are still about 100 firefighters on scene, compared to the 1,320 firefighters deployed at the height of the blaze when more than 2,000 homes had to be evacuated, according to the Daily News. According to Fire Inspector Don Kunitomi, the fire damaged one home and three mobile homes, completely destroying only one structure. Damage totals have not been released. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the newspaper. Authorities suspect the fire was sparked by someone working on a car wheel. Today, firefighters responded to a small brush fire that began right next to Interstate 5 freeway in the Newhall Pass area, north of Los Angeles, California. The fire was reported at around 11:40 a.m. with initial reports of cars driving through flames, according to KABC-TV. When firefighters arrived, they closed all northbound lanes of the Interstate to battle the fire from the ground and air. There is no estimate on acreage burned. If conditions warrant, the fire watch that has been issued could be upgraded to a red flag warning, according to the Daily News. Author:Barbara Brooks - Fire Department Network News
