After numerous female friends approached firefighter Bryan Russell about introducing them to his single co-workers, his wife Jennifer came up with the idea of starting a dating website for firefighters. The two founded www.DateAHero.com, and three years later the website is thriving with over 7,000 members. The unique dating website offers free memberships for firefighters, law enforcement officers, and active-duty or reserve military personnel. Women and men who want to meet and interact with the heroes have a variety of memberships option, ranging from $9.99 to $67.96. Members of life-saving or life-enhancing professions, such as medicine or education, are given a discount. Like other dating websites, members can post pictures and biographies and leave comments for other users. However, Russell says that DateAHero.com is better than other dating sites in that it offers men a larger pool of women to meet than its competitors. He explains, "Most websites it's a pretty even match. You usually have about 52% male, 48% female. Our site is 70% female, and so we're 30% male, because it's mostly heroes and there's mostly women coming to meet the heroes. So for firemen out there, for the guys out there who want to meet women, it is a much better site to go to because they have a higher percentage as there are more women looking for guys." He goes on to say that there are a large variety of women from different age groups and backgrounds among the website's members. DateAHero.com also requires identity verification for the firefighters, law enforcement officers, and military personnel who sign up for the website. Russell explains that applicants must provide the company with their fire department's name, the name of one of their chiefs, and a contact phone number. The screening process is discreet in that DateAHero.com does not alert the department about the reason for the verification call, but it does protect the other members of the site by verifying the heroes' identities. Currently, the website is exclusive to residents of Southern California, however, the Russell's are working on capitalizing their company to allow it to be a national website. In the meantime he encourages firefighters from other states to use the website, as many women write that they would be willing to move for the right man in their profiles. DateAHero.com has become very popular in the last three years, with one confirmed wedding, one engagement and several happy couples attributable to the site. Bryan Russell is currently working with a production company to create a reality show centered around the website. Author:Deanne Goodman - FDNNTV.com
