Discovery Park Wildland Fire Burns in Sacramento
Just after 10:00 p.m. on September 6, 2010, fire crews were dispatched to Discovery Park for a reported grass fire. When firefighters arrived they found approximately ten acres of heavy brush and trees burning in an area between the bike trail and Garden Highway, north of the Sacramento River. A second alarm grass assignment was immediately requested and brought companies from Sacramento, Metro, and West Sacramento fire departments to battle the blaze. Initial winds were blowing burning embers across Garden Highway and threatening an apartment complex under construction, as well as, contributed to the spread of the fire which grew to approximately twelve acres. Several companies were placed along Garden Highway and near the apartment complex to ensure the flying embers did not cause additional fires. Thick brush and trees with limited access and fire hydrants made it difficult for fire crews to access and extinguish the fire. Firefighters discovered several homeless camps while they were attempting to make access to the fire. Fire companies have the fire contained and nearly extinguished; however several companies remain on scene to address smoldering trees which are both fall hazards and fire spread concerns for firefighters. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Author:Sacramento Fire Department Press Release
