Division V's Battle of the Badges Blood Drive
"Relax, it's just a pinch!" This was asked of Antelope Valley residents and off-duty Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel who participated at the sixth annual American Red Cross Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. "I feel so wonderful to be able to save a life," says Division V Secretary Eileen Miranda. This was her first blood donation experience. "The process was painless, did not take long, and the staff was very nice. I will definitely do it again next year!" According to American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Associate Cheryl Gonzales, by the end of the day 18 pints were collected which will save 54 Lives! Gonzales was a trooper in her "blood drop" costume waving folks into the North County Fire Station 129 Training Center to donate blood. "Our joint mission of saving lives is what this day is all about," says Acting Division V Assistant Fire Chief Gerald Cosey. "Towards the end of the day it was standing room only in the classroom—humbling." The traditional fruit juice and snacks were given to donors, along with FREE vouchers for two tickets to a Los Angeles Clippers game, a limited- edition Battle of the Badges T-Shirt and a coupon for a free appetizer from Mimi's Café. Nice!!! To date, participating uniformed personnel have gone beyond the call of duty by aiding the American Red Cross with saving as many as 34,700 lives! The 2012 Battleof the Badges campaign will run through February 18, and hopes to exceed participation from last year's total of 170 Southern California agencies.
