Domino's Teams Up With NFPA

Pizza is usually delivered in a car, but during the month of October 2010, Domino's Pizza, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and fire departments across the United States partnered together and delivered pizzas in fire trucks to help promote fire safety. This event was part of Fire Prevention Week [October 3-9] and this year's message was "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With." Customers who ordered from participating Domino's Pizza's in the month of October may have had a surprise delivery. "Today we are sending firefighters out on certain deliveries to our customers, and they are going to be checking their smoke alarms to make sure that their batteries are working," stated Vanessa Wilson, General Manager of the Domino's Pizza franchise in Vista, California. "If they are up to code, and everything is good, then we are going to give them dinner on us." If customers' smoke alarm batteries were not up to code, firefighters provided them with a free smoke alarm or a fresh smoke alarm battery free of charge. "Some people don't know if their batteries are good or not, so we'll find out!," remarked Vista Fire Department Captain John Greenstone. At one particular stop at the Pacheco family residence, all of the smoke alarms were in working order. The home was even equipped with a carbon monoxide detector. Therefore, the Pacheco family received 2 medium pizzas, cheese sticks and buffalo wings free of charge. The Pacheco family claimed that having functioning smoke alarms is necessary for the safety of their family. Vanessa Wilson said, "It will help remind people to do it. I know it would remind me if I was calling and ordering because as soon as I got the notice that we were going to be doing this, I had my husband check ours." This Fire Prevention Week event was an excellent reminder, since nearly 2/3 of home fire deaths occur in houses without smoke alarms or smoke alarms that do not function properly. Fire Prevention Week is scheduled for October 9th through 15th for 2011.
