EMS Station 27 Opened in the Bronx, New York
A new building in the Bronx has an automatic fire door, a vascular security system and a three-vehicle apparatus floor.

It may sound like a place you'd see in a James Bond movie, but it's actually the new EMS Station 27 in the Bronx.

"With the opening of this state of the art facility, the Department solidifies our commitment to the Riverdale and Kingsbridge communities," Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 5.

The new state-of-the-art facility includes two new technology initiatives.

The first is an automatic fire door which rapidly deploys upon detection of fire in the apparatus floor area. The door, located between the apparatus floor and the station, secures the living space of the building and limits smoke infiltration.

The second key initiative is a new vascular security system. Deployed throughout the building, members entering the facility and accessing key areas of the building, including secured narcotics, will utilize this system to identify themselves through vascular hand recognition. Only through confirmed verification will access be granted.

The structure was completed by the coordinated efforts of the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), the FDNY's Facilities Management bureau and FDNY EMS.

David Resnick, Deputy Commissioner of the DDC, described the ribbon cutting ceremony as "a very happy day."

The members assigned to the new Station came from units across the borough.

"This is a new family, and we welcome you to your new home," said Chief of EMS Abdo Nahmod.

Capt. Ed Bradley, the commander of Station 27, added, "We're ready and standing by, ready to assist the people of the Bronx."
