Fire crews responded to a basement apartment fire at 2928 Louisville at approximately 1:05 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011.

Upon arrival, the first responding unit reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the residence where the basement apartment was located. Approximately 23 fire fighters extinguished the fire in 10 minutes and no fire fighter injuries were reported.

A woman and three young children were in the apartment at the time of the fire but safely escaped without any injuries. American Red Cross was notified and will be assisting the family.

Preliminary reports point to an electrical issue as the cause of the fire. A fire investigation is being conducted. Total fire damages were estimated at $60,000. No damages were reported to the upper level of the home.

This should serve as a reminder to the public that a fire can occur anywhere and at anytime. Electrical safety is very important and the public should follow these safety tips:
  • Replace or repair damaged or loose electrical cords.
  • Avoid running extension cords across doorways or under carpets.
  • Always use a qualified electrician to add additional outlets.
  • Avoid overloading outlets.
  • If outlets or switches feel warm, or if you have frequent problems with blowing fuses, or flickering lights, call a qualified electrician.
