Fire Truck Video Review - Pierce Velocity

The Pierce Velocity debuted in September of 2006 with much fanfare and a Detroit automaker-style unveiling. After speaking with firefighters across the country, Pierce Manufacturing designed the Velocity with many innovative features ranging from an easy-access hood for daily maintenance to improved SCBA seating.

Apparatus Editor Paul Batista gets behind the wheel of the Pierce Velocity to show you some of the new features that set this truck apart from the competition.

"I'm apparatus Editor, Paul Batista, and I am behind the wheel of the Pierce Velocity, a vehicle that is truly changing the face of the firefighting apparatus. Chances are you probably recognize this truck; it is Pierce's latest offering of cab designs for the fire industry.

The face of the Velocity has definitely gained a lot of attention from firefighters. Some like it, some aren't so sure what to make of it, but one thing's for sure, this gives us a look into the future design of firefighting apparatus. The Velocity cab can hold up to ten passengers, and while it may look different, the design is said to be based on what firefighters have been asking for.

First, there is more storage, what Pierce calls clutter management. The center console has integrated spaces for handheld radio docking stations, cup holders, and a large flat area in front of the officer.

Second, newly designed seats that are described as comfortable and functional. Firefighter's air packs buckle in place automatically when they sit down and release automatically when they get up.

Improvement number three takes us outside the cab. While unusual looking, the 111 bus style mirrors gives the engineer a more complete view of the vehicles surroundings. Turn signal activated cameras switch on automatically. Imagine how this would help if you are behind the wheel. And to avoid distortion, and to improve visibility, the windshield is one piece.

Improvement four deals with easier routine maintenance. No more tilting the cab to reach washer fluid, coolant, or power steering fluid. And for major maintenance, under this car-like hood are the cab tilt controls. Now let's go back inside.

Well, you don't have to worry about bumping your head on the top of this cab. The Velocity features a wider entry and exit door, as well as a wider flatter floor - features that were not present on previous designs.
