Members of  FDNY Engine 53 and Ladder 43 helped rescue three people from the Hudson River near East 106th Street on July 28th.

"The firefighters were working under the extreme conditions," said Lt. Thomas Delgrosso from Engine 53, assigned to Ladder 13. "Everyone did a tremendous job."

Firefighters were called to the scene at 12:17 p.m. Witnesses said they saw one man in his 60s fall into the water and two men in their 20s jump in to help.

The men were holding onto a beam and getting pushed under the pier by the strong current when help arrived.

From Engine 53, Lt. Delgrosso, and Firefighters Chris Schickler (assigned to Engine 35) John Rodriguez (assigned to Engine 39); and from Ladder 43, Lt. Tim Norum (assigned to Battalion 11) and Firefighters Shane Benac (assigned to Ladder 13) and Matt Lopez (assigned to Ladder 16) responded.

Firefighters swam to the victims and assisted them to a ladder that the members had secured on the pier.

Lt. Delgrosso said both Good Samaritans were exhausted. One was able to help himself out, while the other was turning blue and barely conscious. The original victim was blue and completely unconscious.

Firefighters in the water and on the pier helped pull each of them to safety.

Two of the victims were taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center, the third refused medical attention. Four firefighters were taken to Mt. Sinai Medical Center with minor injuries.
