February is American Heart Month: Keep Your Department “Heart Strong”
Cardiovascular diseases are our nation's number one killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, the President declares each February "American Heart Month." The emergency response community is no stranger to cardiovascular disease. Every year, about half of all firefighter deaths are attributed to heart attack, which is the leading cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities. Fire Corps teams can help members of their department stay healthy and safe by initiating or assisting with health and wellness programs. The National Volunteer Fire Council designed the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program to promote fitness, nutrition, and health awareness within America's fire and emergency services. It is the nation's only heart attack prevention program targeted at all firefighters and EMS personnel, both volunteer and career. Visit www.healthy-firefighter.org for resources and information on how to improve the health of your department this February and throughout the year. Author:Fire Corps Press Release
