Field Fire West of Forest Grove, Oregon Burns 8 Acres
Firefighters from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue (FGF&R) were call to a reported grass fire in the area of SW Dilley RD and SW Stringtown RD shortly before 4pm on October 5. First arriving crews found a field that had recently been cut burning approximately 2 acres, they made access at 1259 SW Stringtown RD, and this address is located about a mile west of the city of Forest Grove. Crews experienced moderate winds and flames that were 5 feet tall, the fire was spreading quickly. They established a walking mobile attack, which is when crews fight the fire while they progressively move the vehicle along the fire line. Crews quickly realized that more resources were need and a 2nd Alarm was requested at 4:15 which brought additional equipment to the scene. As the wind picked up, it continued to spread the fire up hell and at 4:30 a 3rd Alarm was requested for more equipment. Also at that time a separate assignment was called upon to bring units in to help protect a house that was in the direction of the fast moving fire.

After an hour of fighting the flames, the fire was under control and recalled at 5:30. Crews remained on scene for well over an hour extinguishing hard to reach hot spots. The fire was contained to the field and a small drainage ditch that had light brush and trees in it. None of the houses threatened were damaged and no one on scene was injured. The fire is estimated to have burned close to 8 acres of land and is believed to be started by a combine that was working in the field.

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue wants to remind everyone that just because it is fall, it doesn't mean that vegetation wont burn. It is also backyard burning season and we want to remind everyone that if you do burn yard debris, have a clear space around your fire so it won't spread to nearby vegetation and to also have a shovel and hose available.

FGF&R was assisted on scene by: Cornelius Fire Dept, Hillsboro Fire Dept, Gaston Fire District, Banks Fire District, Washington Co. Fire Dist. #2, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Washington County Sheriffs Office.
