Fire Corps National Advisory Committee Meets in Virginia

The Fire Corps National Advisory Committee (NAC) met on November 14, 2011 in Alexandria, VA. The NAC, which is comprised of representatives from many national fire and emergency service organizations as well as other prominent leaders in the industry, came together to provide expertise and guidance for Fire Corps' activities and to discuss the direction of the program.

Fire Corps Director Sarah Lee and Program Manager Lori Moon updated the NAC on the progress of Fire Corps since the group's last meeting, including initiatives and resources. Additionally, Timothy O'Dowd from the United States Fire Administration (USFA) addressed the group and affirmed USFA's support of the Fire Corps program.

Oregon State Advocate Stella Hickey was presented with the Advocate of the Year award. Over the past year, Stella has worked tirelessly to enhance Fire Corps in her state. She has devoted over 900 hours as an Advocate and reached almost 1,800 people with the Fire Corps message. Her work to expand the program led her to be named as the Secretary for the OR State Citizen Corps Advisory Board and also the Secretary/Treasurer for the OR Volunteer Firefighters Association.

"Stella Hickey is an exemplary advocate for Fire Corps," said Lee. "She has gone above and beyond in her work to further the program not only in Oregon, but also in states that don't have a designated State Advocate. Her passion for the fire service and commitment to the growth of Fire Corps have been invaluable."

Also during the meeting, Chief Bradd Clark, Vice Chair of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Executive Board, presented the 2011 Fire Corps Award of Excellence to the Hernando County (FL) Fire Corps. The award is sponsored by IFSTA and Fire Protection Publications. Members of the Hernando County Fire Corps program were present to accept the award and provided a presentation outlining their program's success.

The Hernando County Fire Corps has 29 community volunteers supporting local firefighters, police officers, and emergency personnel. The team provides a variety of services including performing clerical duties, conducting fire safety education, and providing rehabilitative services for emergency personnel.

"We are pleased to recognize the outstanding work of the Hernando County Fire Corps with the Award of Excellence," Lee said. "The dedication of these volunteers, the amount of time they put in, and their continuous work to enhance and aid their local fire department, as well as other emergency service providers, is truly admirable."
