Winners of the William M. Carey and the Ronald K. Mengel Awards were recently announced by the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The awards are given to the best suppression and detection presentations at SUPDET, FPRF's annual technical working conference on suppression and detection research, and applications. Participants of the conference vote on winners who are presented with the awards the following year, according to the NFPA. The 2009 winners were presented with their awards at  SUPDET 2010, held Feb. 16-19 in Orlando.

The William M. Carey Award for the best presentation in the suppression category was given to Roger Thomas of Tyco Asia Pacific for "Water Conservation and Sustainable Use in Fire Suppression Systems." This award was established in 2001, and named after Carey who was a senior staff engineer at Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. He participated in many FPRF fire suppression projects, according to the NFPA.

The Ronald K. Mengel Award for the best presentation in the detection category was given to Thomas Fabian, George Hunter, Paul Patty, and Pravinray Gandhi of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. for "Development of New Flaming and Smoldering Polyurethane Foam Test Protocols for UL 217 Standards on Smoke Alarms." This award was originally part of the Carey Award but was renamed for Mengel in 2008, according to the NFPA. Mengel was the vice president of industry affairs of the system sensor division of the Honeywell Corporation. He contributed to many Research Foundation projects and served on the Foundation's Fire Detection and Alarm Research Advisory Council.

The FPRF plans, manages, and communicates consortium-funded research on fire safety issues along with scientists and laboratories around the world. For move information on the Fire Protection Research Foundation or the National Fire Protection Association visit www.nfpa.org.
