Fire Sprinkler Stops Blaze at Cornerstone Christian Academy & Tyke’s Preschool
An automatic fire sprinkler stopped a fire that started on a teacher’s desk at the Cornerstone Christian Academy & Tyke’s Preschool on December 6, 2011. Approximately 500 students were in the school when the fire occurred. Everyone was able to evacuate without injury. Because of the fire sprinkler, students are back in school for the rest of the day. Fire dispatchers were notified that the alarm system activated in the school at 5825 Eldora Ave at 9 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire on a teacher’s desk, which had mostly been extinguished by an automatic fire sprinkler directly above the desk in the ceiling. All of the students were in chapel, which is located in another part of the school, at the time of the fire. None of the preschool to grade eight students was exposed to fire or smoke. Damage is estimated at $5,000. Damage was confined to the desk. The fire started when a candle for a holiday decoration caught fire on the desk. After a short time, the students and staff were permitted to re-enter the school, except for the room where the fire occurred. That room is in the process of being cleaned. Because of the automatic fire sprinkler in this school, everyone in the building was able to escape without injury. Damage was kept to a minimum. Students and staff were able to return to the school. The fire was accidental. Author:Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Press Release
