Firefighters from Several Departments Extinguish Palm Canyon Vegetation Fire
On September 8, 2011 at 1:28p.m., Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire in Palm Canyon within the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation. Immediate, decisive actions by firefighters held the fire to 22 acres and prevented the fire from spreading into nearby homes. 60 Firefighters from Palm Springs Fire Department, the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, CalFire and Riverside County Fire Department battled the blaze in hot dry weather with 11 engines, 2 handcrews, 1 helicopter and 2 airtankers. One US Forest Service firefighter suffered a heat related injury and was transported to a local area hospital for evaluation and treatment. The fire area is a culturally sensitive area, firefighters are using minimal impact suppression tactics, and full containment is planned for 6:00p.m. on September 9, 2011.
