Long Beach Firefighters Take To The Streets For MDA
The Muscular Dystrophy Association's (MDA) Fill-the-Boot fund raising campaign is coming to Long Beach, California. Teams of firefighters will fan out with boots in hand to raise money for children and adults with muscle-wasting diseases, according to a press release from MDA. As a supporter of MDA, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) nearly $300 million has been raised for MDA since 1954, according to the release. Firefighters from Local 372 will be at the intersections of Alamitos & Ocean and PCH & Bellflower on Saturday, December 19, Sunday, December 20, and Monday December 21. "Time and again, these lifesaving heroes give so much of themselves for 'my kids,'" MDA National Chairman Jerry Lewis said. "They've made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many, and as they begin their 2009 campaigns, I hope people will see their tireless dedication and be moved and inspired to do their part." According to the MDA, Fill-the-Boot funds support local and national services, including medical clinics staffed with specialists in muscle disease and accessible summer camps for kids. Local clinics benefiting include Rancho Los Amigos, UCI, UCLA and USC. Local summer camps are held at The Painted Turtle. Money also goes towards MDA worldwide research programs seeking treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease).
