Franklin, Tennessee

The Franklin Fire Department is competing to win $10,000 in grant money, and firefighters are asking residents to help.  Residents are asked to take a short fire safety quiz online and vote for the Franklin Fire Department in Liberty Mutual's Be Fire Smart grant program.  The top 10 departments across the country with the most votes will each win $10,000.  Currently the Franklin Fire Department is in 34th place.

The Franklin Fire Department responds to nearly 6,000 fire, emergency medical and rescue incidents annually.

Fire and Life Safety Educator Jamie Melton said the funds would be used for public education efforts, with an emphasis on children and older adults, both of who are at a greater risk of fire death.  Since August, two people have died in fires in Franklin, including a 75-year old woman.

"This grant would go a long way in educating those who need it most.  We are asking all residents to take a few minutes to show their appreciation by logging on to www.BeFireSmart.com and taking the quiz by the end of this month," said Melton.

Jeremy Conrey, a sales representative for Liberty Mutual, said that in order to vote for the department, you will be required to enter your email address, but the email address will not be used for solicitations of any kind.  "The email addresses are only used to verify that one person is not taking the quiz multiple times and skewing the results," said Conrey.  "The individuals will only receive one email thanking them for participating.  The email will not be used for any type of solicitation or spam."

To vote for the Franklin Fire Department in the Liberty Mutual Be Fire Smart grant program, go to www.befiresmart.com.  The contest ends October 31st.
