Freeport Fire Department First Department to be Screened with Microvolt T-Wave Alternans
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death amongst on-duty firefighters. Freeport Fire Department was the first department in Maine to be screened with a new piece of equipment that can detect the small heartbeat irregularities that indicate a heightened risk for heart complications. This piece of equipment, available for the past seven years, is called Microvolt T-Wave Alternans and was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
