There will be "Cause for Alarm" in west Fullerton Saturday, Oct. 16, but residents need not worry.

"Cause for Alarm" is the title of a special joint venture of the American Red Cross and the Fullerton Fire Department to distribute free smoke alarms to residents.

The area selected for the Oct. 16 distribution will be bordered by Gilbert Street on the east, Magnolia Avenue on the west, Commonwealth Avenue on the north, and Olive Avenue on the south.

High school-aged Red Cross volunteers and members of the Fire Department will fan out through the neighborhood from 9 a.m.-noon to distribute the free smoke alarms, batteries and information packets printed in both English and Spanish.

"A smoke detector is one of the most effective, yet inexpensive ways a family can protect its home and itself from the tragedy of fire," said Fullerton Fire Chief Wolfgang Knabe.

"We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a working smoke detector in every home, and we're grateful for the Red Cross Youth Volunteers for helping us bring this message to our residents.

Further information about the Cause for Alarm program may be obtained by calling the Red Cross at (714) 481-5300 or the Fire Prevention Division of the Fullerton Fire Department at (714) 738-6500.
