Gainesville, Florida Seeks Fire Chief

The City of Gainesville, Florida is looking for a Fire Chief. Applications must be received by the city by Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 11;59 p.m. EDT.

The Fire Chief is responsible for the administrative and operational functions of the Gainesville Fire Rescue Department (GFR) with a staff of 154 and an annual budget of $14.3 million.

GFR responds to more than 15,000 calls a year and also provides Advanced Life Support EMS, regional hazardous materials response and technical rescue.

Minimum requirements for the position include:
  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in fire science or related subject
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience at the level of District/Battalion Chief or higher
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Hold or obtain a valid State of Florida paramedic certification and a Certificate of Compliance as a State of Florida
  • Firefighter within your probationary period
  • Obtain a valid Florida Driver's License within one month
  • Residence within the city limits is required within six months of completing probation

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
